Napa Valley Casino in American Canyon, CA, offers the Bay Area action-packed Pai Gow poker every day of the week!

Pai Gow, sometimes referred to as "double hand poker," is an Americanized version of Chinese Pai Gow (but instead of playing  with Pai Gow Chinese dominoes, the game is played with poker playing cards bearing standard poker hand values).

At Napa Valley Casino we offer free Pai Gaw lessons twice a week. Our patrons come from all over the Bay Area-we are located just a North of Vallejo heading toward Napa, on Highway 29. We offer our guests free amenities including sandwiches, dinner plates, coffee, soda, and water ... so please come on in and be our guest.

HOW TO PLAY PAI GOW

Pai Gow is played with a standard 52-card deck, and a single joker. The table is set for six players plus the dealer and each player tries to beat the banker (who may be the casino dealer, or one of the other players at the table).

The object of the game is for a player to create two poker hands out of the seven-card hand dealt to them by the dealer. The player must make a five-card poker hand and a two-card poker hand. The five-card poker hand value must be better than the two-card hand. The two-card hand is played "in front" or "on top" of the five-card hand laid out on the Pai Gow table when the player is done setting the two Pai Gow poker hands.

The hand begins after the cards are shuffled and then dealt to the table in seven face-down piles with seven cards in each pile. Four cards are unused regardless of the number of players.

Betting positions are given a number from one to seven beginning with the player acting as banker for that hand then counter-clockwise around the table. The dice cup (containing the dice) is shaken by the Player-Dealer to determine which position receives the first action hand. The Player/Dealer is always counted as 1,8, or 15. The House Dealer will deal each position a hand according to the sum of the dice. The Player-Dealer's hand is kept face down in front of the House-Dealer.

If no player is seated or "in" on a particular spot, the hand is still dealt to that spot, but then discarded (all seven cards) with the four unused cards.

There are a few variations from casino to casino but this is the basic way the game is dealt.

The Joker in Pai Gow at Napa Valley Casino plays as a "bug," that is, in the five-card hand it can be used to complete a straight or flush; otherwise it is always an Ace.

Win, lose, or draw of a Pai Gow hand is determined when the player's now-separated hands goes head-to-head with the banker's "high" and "low" hands. If only one of the player hands beats the banker then it is "a push," or tie. If both of his hands lose to the banker then he loses. If both the player hands beat both banker hands it is a win.

Californian casinos typically charge a flat fee per hand (such as 5 cents or one dollar) to play, win or lose. Other casinos take out of the winnings by percentage (often 5%, known as the rake). While this may seem high, a hand of Pai Gow poker takes a long time to play compared to a game like blackjack, for example, and there are many pushes so the casino doesn't collect that 5% as often as it would collect the house percentage from other games.
